Goal: Stay Sane!
Being a Mom is the hardest job on earth! You never know what kind of day it is going to be when you wake up in the morning. I have noticed over the past few years that I have a better day when I do the following things, regardless of what kind of day the kids are having. The following 5 things work for me.
1. Drink Coffee
It’s not a secret that I love my morning coffee. I actually get excited about breakfast because it means I get to drink coffee. Now, if you are not a coffee drinker, find something else (tea, smoothie, etc) that makes you excited about the morning. It’s about the little things, right?
2. Talk to a friend about a non-kid related topic
This is a big thing for me that I didn’t start doing until recently and it has changed my days. I didn’t realize how important it was. As a SAHM all of your time is devoted to playing, bathing, changing, and feeding your kids. Most of the time its great, but a mental break and change of topic is usually needed and necessary. It just resets my day and reminds me that I am more than a mom, I am a friend as well. Try talking to your Mom friends about a non-kid related topic. It’s harder than it sounds, believe me! It will help both you and your Mom friends have the mental break you both deserve.
3. Cross off 1 thing on your to do list
I am a natural busy body and love days where I can cross a lot off my to do list. Now, with 2 kids at home this has been more of a challenge. I try to accomplish 1 task a day. If I can pull off more, great! For me and my personality, this is a huge thing for me. Regardless of how hard the day has been, taking time out complete 1 goal for the day really makes a difference in my day.
4. Get dressed
Most days I try to leave the house at least once. On the days that I don’t it is easy to get sucked into my pajamas and glasses all day. It sounds so nice and tempting in the morning hours but in the evening I feel like I didn’t get anything accomplished, even if I did. So everyday I make it a point to get dressed and ready in the morning. Of course I save my nicer yoga pants for the days I leave the house! It may seem pointless and a waste of time in the morning but it pay off at the end of the day when I feel better about myself.
5. Let the schedule go
Now I know that this is not always an option with school, extra classes and appointments. But if possible, try to have a loose schedule. This summer I made it a goal to have an easy, (almost) schedule free summer. A summer with no camps, classes or sports. I will admit that at the beginning of summer I was dreading it. I am used to the school year with many different activities and classes besides school. I was not sure how I was going to survive the summer with nothing! Well, we are only half way through summer now but I can tell you that its been great and I am actually enjoying his summer.
I am writing this stuff down to remind myself what I need to do on a daily basis and what works for me. On days when this doesn’t work, I just breathe, and remind myself that tomorrow is a new day. I hope some of these things help take your day from insane to mostly sane. We are all in this together right?
